Solar System: Planets: Pluto

This planet has not been very well studied, mainly due to its distance from the Earth. It was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh in February of 1930, in Lowell Observatory. Some basic characteristics of Pluto:

Due to the low weight of the planet, its moon, Charon, is in synchronous rotation with the planet, with a period of 6.39 earth days. Charon's size is about 1186 km, which is more than half of Pluto's size. This probably caused the synchonous rotation. Charon's surface is covered with water ice, as opposed to a methane ice surface of Pluto itself.
